The snow storm today up at Alpine Meadows (Sunday, November 7) was so nice to see, and it was lots of fun to venture out to see what was happening at different elevations. Without a doubt, winter conditions were expected at the top of the Summit Six Chair given the temperature decrease and wind increase on the way up the mountain.

Being out in the elements, regardless of the time of year, is much like catching a glimpse of Mother Nature’s cookbook of secret recipes. Today’s storm is the beginning of the winter, and she was indeed cooking up a beautiful storm out there – filled with a dash of variable winds (west, southwest, south, and back again); a handful of Fahrenheit varieties; and an econ-o-sized bag of pre-season pow. When I left, there were no hints of her taking a break from the kitchen.

Here are different videos showing her work at various elevations:

Lake Tahoe, California – San Francisco and Truckee, California based JMA Ventures, LLC announced today the acquisition of Lake Tahoe’s West Shore Cafe, a full service lakefront property located in Homewood, California, adjacent to Homewood Mountain Resort.

JMA’s acquisition of West Shore Cafe represents a new beginning for the inn and restaurant, which closed its doors during the summer of 2009.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to offer the West Shore Cafe,” said Art Chapman, Chairman of JMA Ventures, LLC. “The re-opening fits JMA’s commitment to restore the vitality of the west shore. We intend to bring back good food at an affordable price to those looking for a lake view dining experience; and to have some fun at the same time,” he said. “The Cafe will create new employment opportunities in both the winter and summer; and will encourage destination visits to Lake Tahoe’s west shore,” he added.

The West Shore Cafe is the fourth property acquired by JMA Ventures within California’s North Lake Tahoe destination. Other current holdings include Homewood Mountain Resort; Alpine Meadows Ski Resort; and the Hotel Avery – a full service four star hotel slated for construction, which received approval from Truckee, California’s Planning Commission during November, 2008. Within San Francisco, JMA holdings include Ghirardelli Square; Fairmont Heritage Place; 706 Mission Street; and Epic Roast House and Waterbar restaurants along San Francisco’s famed Embarcadero.

JMA has plans to announce the re-opening date for dining and lodging later this summer. For additional information about West Shore Cafe, visit WestShoreCafe.com.

After X Games, we flew home, back here to our training base at Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe, and there was a Nor Am race up at Sugar Bowl. So, got off the airplane late at night, got up the next morning, and went up to the Sugar Bowl race. First day on the course, I had missed training, but got up there a little bit in the morning and came out and got fifth place. Going in to the second day, I had a good feeling, had a little more time on the track and came out the second day and won qualifying and ended up winning the race. It was our last ski cross race before the Olympics, and a great way to go through the motions and get a good feeling going into Vancouver.

It’s hard to believe January 2010 has come and gone. It was a blink of an eye, and one to remember: 10 feet of snow fell at the base lodge and 14 fell at the mid mountain stake. Storms like that aren’t just weather; they’re a journey.

With all the unbridled wind, prodigious accumulation, beautiful moon glow, early mornings, late nights, and that enigmatic anticipation we all feel during a big cycle – it was the promise of sun and endless powder that met us in the end.

Snow led us all the way through January. All said and done, it was one of the biggest January months Alpine has seen since 1970.

You’re always sharing your stories and photos with us; so we tried to keep up with the storms this month to share some of the memorable days with you.

Thanks to everyone for a great January 2010. As this is being written on February 2 the flurries have started once again; so here’s to more great months ahead:

After an exciting and snowy December we have entered what I like to call June-uary. Our January warm spell means one thing, great skiing all over the mountain. Today I found cold chalky snow, and even some powder on north facing slopes, and springy corn-like snow on south and east facing terrain. The groomers are in great shape and the park features are really coming together all over the mountain. The snowy start to our season has really set us up nicely for the rest of the year. Just because its warm doesn’t mean the skiing isn’t good, it means its going to be great. Happy June-uary!!!
